Francisco Javier Fernández Polo is a Tenured Lecturer in English at the University of Santiago, Spain. He studied English Philology at this university, graduating in 1987. He obtained his Ph.D degree in English Philology in 1996 with a dissertation on the translation of popular science texts from English into Spanish. His undergraduate teaching experience includes English syntax and currently two courses on English-Spanish translation (introductory and advanced) as well as part of a course in English as a Foreign Language. He also teaches a Ph.D course in Research in English for Academic Purposes in collaboration with Prof. Mario Cal Varela. While his research interests and trajectory are varied, he has always had a special fondness for applied issues, including translation, language teaching and the new technologies, contrastive rhetoric, textual design and accessibility, and popular science discourse, among others. Of late he has developed a special research interest in English for research purposes, particularly in spoken genres and native vs. non-native uses. In the last ten years he participated in two EU-funded research projects, Design and Accessibility of Babyfood Labels from the Consumer’s Point of View, co-ordinated by Prof. Heikki Nyyssönen from Oulu University, Finland (1998-2000), and The Language On-Line Portfolio Project, co-ordinated by Prof. Veronica Crosbie from Dublin City University, Ireland (2004-2007). He has also been the main researcher of a project funded by the Galician regional research authorities entitled Análisis das necesidades de inglés na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (English needs analysis at the University of Santiago de Compostela) (2002-2004). He is currently a member of the research group in the English Department, USC, headed by Prof. Ignacio Palacios Martínez.
