Francisco Javier Fernández Polo

Francisco Javier Fernández Polo is a Tenured Lecturer in English at the University of Santiago, Spain. He studied English Philology at this university, graduating in 1987. He obtained his Ph.D degree in English Philology in 1996 with a dissertation on the translation of popular science texts from English into Spanish. He currently teaches specialized translation, oral communication skills and English for academic purposes. Although his early research interests had to do with translation studies, his latest research focuses on English as a lingua franca in academic and research context, with a special interest in the analysis of both spoken and written interactions in computer-mediated contexts in particular. He has published several articles in major international journals like English for Specific Purposes (Elsevier), Journal of English for Academic Purposes (Elsevier) or Journal of English as a Lingua Franca (De Gruyter), and has a number of contributions in books published by academic publishers like Springer or Peter Lang. In the last ten years he participated in two EU-funded research projects, Design and Accessibility of Babyfood Labels from the Consumer’s Point of View, co-ordinated by Prof. Heikki Nyyssönen from Oulu University, Finland (1998-2000), and The Language On-Line Portfolio Project, co-ordinated by Prof. Veronica Crosbie from Dublin City University, Ireland (2004-2007). Currently,he is one of the official USC coordinators of the Multilingual Student Translation (MUST) project, coordinated by Sylviane Granger and Marie-Aude Lefer at the Université Catholique de Louvain. This is an international project which aims to collect a large multilingual student translation corpus with rich, standardized metadata that combines insights from both Learner Corpus Research and Corpus-Based Translation Studies. More than forty research teams have joined MUST since its creation. He has also been head of a project funded by the Galician regional research authorities entitled Análisis das necesidades de inglés na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (English needs analysis at the University of Santiago de Compostela) (2002-2004). He is a member of the research group in the English Department of the USC, headed by Prof. Ignacio Palacios Martínez, and co-head of two recent projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities on spoken English and English in computer-mediated communication.
